About us

The objectives of SchoolFan are to:

Empower teachers in 4 European countries: Portugal, Spain, France and Greece to apply an innovative citizen science project in their secondary school classrooms to report, analyse and debunk fake news related to climate change.

Foster secondary students’ digital, scientific and citizenship competences.

Develop a scalable citizen science model that can be replicated in other contexts.

In SchoolFan we will:
  • Map how and where media literacy and climate change education is addressed in curricula
  • Develop teacher training resources
  • Develop digital learning resources for students
  • Implement and evaluate the citizen science project in schools
  • Develop a scalable proof of concept for the citizen science project
  • Gain an understanding of the climate related fake news
  • Disseminate project outcomes

Project divided by work packages to achieve the main objectives of the project

Work Package nº1

Project Management


Lead by: Universidade de Aveiro and Cercle FSER.

This work package aims to monitor the progress, quality and achievement of the project. A Quality Assurance Plan containing the timeline of deliverables, the relationship of all activities and outcomes and definition of Key Performance Indicators has been developed by which means we will assess the project progress and deliverables and assured by the coordinating partners.

The grant management is also part of this work package.

Work Package nº2

Mapping entry points for fighting climate-related misinformation in schools


Lead by: Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

The objectives of this work package are:

  • To map the landscape of how climate education, media literacy and citizen science are/can be integrated in the school curricula of the participating countries, in order to find the best way to apply the activity in the participant countries.
  • To analyse the curricula of the 4 different countries
  • To do focus groups with teachers and teacher trainers on how they see climate education, citizen science and fake news aligned with the curricula and what opportunities they feel exist to explore these topics in formal education.
  • To adapt a framework for the identification, debunking, and limitation of dissemination of fake news.
Work Package nº3

Teacher training on the identification and debunking of fake news about climate change

The objectives of this work package are:

  • To develop innovative digital educational resources and approaches for secondary students aimed at promoting the digital, scientific and citizenship competences they need to actively identify and debunk fake news and participate as a responsible citizen in complex social problems, ready to be used by teachers in the 4 participating countries.
  • Develop innovative teacher training materials that will be used to empower secondary teachers to apply a citizen science approach and competence-based teaching and assessment to promote their students’ digital, scientific and citizenship competences to identify and debunk fake news related to climate change.
  • To train 60 teachers in the 4 participant countries to incorporate the strategies and resources developed in this project to promote competences based teaching and assessment and to empower their students to recognize, debunk and limit the dissemination of fake news.

Implementation of a scalable citizen science model

The objectives of this work package are:

  • To communicate to students and teachers the relevance of fighting against misinformation on such a sensitive issue as climate change.
  • To establish communication channels between the different partners of the project and from them to other interested entities and groups.
  • To disseminate the outcomes generated by the project to the target groups involved so that they become aware and take concrete actions so that they have the necessary tools and critical thinking to avoid fake news in relation to climate change.

Dissemination and Exploitation

The objectives of this work package are:
